Leeds Children's Mayor Candidate: Swarcliffe Primary School
Name: Haleem Comrie
School: Swarcliffe Primary School
Slogan: Travel safely, travel SMART (Safe Movement ARound Town)
If I was children’s mayor of Leeds I would I would help children to feel comfortable and confident travelling around Leeds on public transport. It will be achieved by creating child friendly bus timetables, more noticeable lighting around bus stops, a child safety zone in all major train and bus stations, incorporating safety officers during the night and asking young people to design safety posters and leaflets about travelling around Leeds.
On many occasions both my friends and I have found it difficult to read bus timetables. This has prevented us from travelling to different exiting destinations in Leeds. Having child friendly bus timetables will allow young people to travel around easily. Each bus and train station will have an allocated area where children can go to for help and advice about travelling. In addition to this they can report any safety incidents with a bully button. This will allow Leeds authority to know of any problems straight away.
Children across Leeds could design travel safety posters or booklets which include top travel and safety tips. There could even be a competition to encourage children to get involved.
These ideas would not be too costly and would benefit all children in Leeds by:
Children will feel safe travelling around Leeds
Children will be confident and be able to see new sites around the city which they have never been to.
They will have safe places to go to if they experience any problems whilst travelling.
Parents will feel happier knowing their children are safer.
Surely intelligent people like you can recognise that this is a SMART idea!
