Leeds Children's Mayor Candidate: Harehills Primary School
Name: Maisune Rafiq
School: Harehills Primary School
Slogan: Inspire Leeds, Inspire the World!
If I was Leeds Mayor for the day I would influence the community to transform Leeds, and slowly develop a greener and more environmentally friendly city for all to care for and enjoy.
You may be thinking how such an amazing and fantastic idea can be realistically achieved without spending large amounts of money. The answer is simple. I propose we introduce a new and innovative system in which every school is given the task to pick up litter and recycle what would have gone in the bin, and added to the masses of landfill that taint our community.
This could be done in small, but extremely effective steps. This is what I suggest:
• Teachers could educate pupils about the importance of preserving a litter-free future. This would be a massive step towards educating over a thousand children that would ultimately inspire future generations.
• Children could be involved in a litter picking campaign where different schools take part in making our local parks a cleaner and safer place.
• There could be a “Go Green” day, where the whole day is taken up by making and selling the items they produced.
• Competitions and celebration events in local litter free parks would be a great way to promote the idea and involve everyone.
As you can see I am extremely passionate about the welfare of our city, and I know you care as much as I do about the necessity of keeping the next generation of youngsters aware of just how much being eco- friendly matters .
We have trialled new schemes within our school. Last year, children in Year6 made elephant containers out of used milk bottles and filled them with chocolates. With the money they raised by selling them, they gave the proceeds to Fair Trade. Now imagine if all the schools were involved in a new recycling scheme. The results would be colossal. Leeds would be unique and individual, Leeds would become a ‘Child Friendly Leeds’.
The world would feel inspired! This could change our attitude towards the effects of littering and recycling forever. I leave you with this life-changing decision.
