Leeds Children's Mayor Candidate: Carr Manor Primary School

Name: Cameron Jackson
School: Carr Manor Primary School
Slogan: Think Bike. Think Safe

If I was the child mayor of Leeds, I’d make Leeds a safer and easier place to travel by bike. Cycling is one of the easiest and fun ways to keep fit and if children keep fit then future generations will have less health problems in later life.

To encourage children to ride their bikes to school I would make sure every school had an area where bikes can be safely locked up.

Bike lanes would make it easy for children to ride to school and not have to worry about cars. The bike lanes would also have traffic lights, so it will be easy to cross junctions without having to wait.

Having more adults on bikes would mean less pollution and more parking spaces. If there were fewer cars on the road there would be less car crashes and accidents. It would also mean fewer cars in the way for people that lived near schools. I would also make the speed limit around schools 20mph.

I would do this by adding new bike routes and safe bike lanes across the city. There could be bike parks at work and big ones like car parks, so that anyone can take their bikes into the middle of Leeds. In Holland all the train stations have a bike park in front of them, so that hundreds of people can use them.

In Amsterdam, the capital of Holland, there are bikes available that anyone can use and then leave in public places for the next person to use. If we had a system like this in Leeds it would allow people who don’t have bikes to enjoy free, safe and healthy transport. I would also hold meetings about the new bike lanes for the public, schools, cycling groups and travel companies to attend.

Putting all my ideas together will lead to a healthier city, so…

Think Bike. Think Safe

Brilliant Cameron. I have a bike through the bike to work scheme but I have to travel on the outer ring road and down Otley road and the car drivers attitudes and pot holes make it so unsafe. You get my vote good luck

Well done Cameron - this is very well written and I would love to get on my bike in Leeds (at the moment it is too frightening) Used to ride my bike everywhere in Hull and stopped the minute I moved to Leeds. Something needs to be done!

An excellent idea. It promotes a fun way for children to keep fit, and it would cut down on pollution if more people could be encouraged to cycle instead of driving.
