Leeds Children's Mayor Candidate: Carr Manor Primary School
Name: Gracie Clarkson
School: Carr Manor Primary School
Slogan: Leeds: Safe and Sound Together!
If I was Children’s Mayor of Leeds…
I would make sure that children and young people will be heard, feel respected and feel safe which brings me to my first proposal ‘OPERATION SAFE HAVEN’.
Operation Safe Haven is where shops display some kind of sticker on the door or window to show children and young people that they can go in to get help or use the telephone if they are frightened, lost or in trouble. The Safe Haven symbol should become as recognisable as the logo for McDonalds or Nike for instance. The symbol, for example, could be anything from a simple orange circle to a more elaborate design incorporate an S.H standing for Safe Haven.
I want children and young people to feel safe in Leeds but it is also very important that they have a sense of belonging in the Leeds community , which is why there should be a ‘FAMILY FUN DAY’.
Every three months there could be a Family Fun Day where families come together to do something e.g. baking – people could bring recipes or buns and cakes to share, or sports – families come together in their local parks and play a number of different sports (rounder’s, football, tennis).
More concerts should take place at venues like the Town Hall to not only raise money for charity and children’s services but to give young people a chance to show off their amazing talents. Having experienced it myself, it is a great opportunity, especially at a young age, to perform in front of a live audience with a stage full of singers and musicians.
Children and young people need to be heard and they need to feel like they are part of something special. That is why every month the Council should champion one idea from a selected Primary school and practically try to bring it to life. Then children will feel respected and believe that their opinions are valued in our community.
It would be an honour if I was chosen to be your mayor. If I was children’s mayor of Leeds, we, the children, will be heard. We will be part of what goes on in Leeds.
A vote for me is a vote for Leeds. I want year 2013-14 to be the year when Leeds changed forever. Do you want to be part of something amazing? Vote for me!
