If I was Children’s Mayor of Leeds I would organize a fun walk for children to improve their health. The great thing about my idea is that it is free and most importantly…it will help the children and young people of Leeds to become healthier!
NHS choices states that ‘a fifth of Year 6 children are found to be obese.’ This is shocking and must be addressed. Now!
Being obese can cause health problems in later life such as heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. This is a future that we do not want for Leeds! By organizing these walks we can encourage children to be active in a fun way, and hopefully lower the risks of obesity for the children and young people of Leeds.
How would I organize this?
Well firstly, I would visit various shops, restaurants and businesses and ask them to donate prizes. I would then contact all schools in the area to encourage them to take part. To get the children interested I would ask the school to run an internal competition; designing a poster to advertise the fun walks, which could take place twice a month.
We could take suggestions from members of the school council on how to make it more fun and get the maximum number of children involved from their schools. To make the walk appeal to even more children we could complete them in fancy dress. The best dressed children would win prizes, which had been donated.
Another option is to raise money along the way, which could help charities in the area. Each month the children could decide on a charity which makes a difference to the lives of children and young people in Leeds and all the money raised would go to this worthy cause. The children could even research these charities as part of school work or homework and find out how the money they have raised has made a difference in their local community.
Eventually we could even organize a fun run; once the children feel up to another challenge! I think this is a great opportunity for the children and young people of Leeds and their parents to live a more active life and win the fight against obesity.
A healthy Leeds is a happy Leeds! : )
