Dance is a creative physical activity that links art and sport. It stretches our imagination and our bodies, contributing to the health of individuals and communities. Twenty per cent of the population dances. Among young people it is the most popular physical activity after football. It is used in advertising, television, film and fashion to signify energy and aspiration. Dance includes everything from ballet to breakdance to ballroom, tap, flamenco, streetdance, tango and bellydancing. Leeds is the biggest centre for dance outside of London. Northern Ballet Theatre
Northern Ballet Theatre is a touring narrative dance company whose distinctive blend of classical dance and theatre is renowned for captivating new audiences.
Their learning and access department delivers a wide range of events that inspire people to be active, creative and confident whilst enjoying dance, theatre and music, including ‘Introduction to Ballet’ classes and a range of school and community projects.

Phoenix Dance Theatre
Phoenix tour nationally and internationally, bringing inspiring and entertaining dance to the widest possible audience. Through its education and audience development programme, it promotes widespread participation in the arts within schools and community settings.
In partnership with Breeze International Youth Festival, Phoenix Dance Education runs Bennu Youth Dance Company, a dance initiative for 16 – 19 year olds.

Yorkshire Dance
Yorkshire Dance is a ‘home’ for dance - a place where dance is discovered, created, learned, investigated and developed in a safe, supportive and professional environment.

DAZL
DAZL uses a pioneering dance-related approach to increase the health and wellbeing of young women in South Leeds. DAZL develops role models from within the community to inspire others to take part, by training local young people as youth dance leaders. It also runs 16 youth dance groups, engaging over 400 young people who regularly get involved. It takes each group’s interests - be they street dance or cheer dance - as a starting point.
RJC
RJC Dance is Britain's most popular and consistently successful Black British-led contemporary dance company. RJC Dance's work is created from a Black British Perspective, with a truly broad appeal to diverse audiences both culturally and socially. Reggae, Jazz and Contemporary dance styles influence the company's choreographic approach, which fuses social dance forms with contemporary dance today.

Northern School of Contemporary Dance
Northern School of Contemporary Dance is a unique dance training institution offering a select group of students the opportunity to develop and excel as dance artists in a conservatoire environment.
To provide community access and participation, NSCD’s Education and Community Department offers a range of dance activities including evening and weekend courses for adults and children. Summer schools are also held annually for young people with an interest in pursuing dance at higher education level.
