Youth Opportunities Fund & Youth Capital Fund

Where have these funds come from and why?
The Government has given individual amounts of funding to all local authorities to be used to set up two ‘pots’ of funding specifically for young people.  This money has been provided to create an opportunity for young people to apply for money to set up facilities, get resources (equipment etc.) and provide activities in the areas in which they live.

What can they be used for?

Youth Opportunity Fund:
You can apply for money from this fund to enable young people to take part in activities they would like to do or to visit places they would like to go to.

Example 1: A group of young people attending a local youth club would like to make a DVD because some of their members have formed a band and they also have members who are good at acting.

Money from the fund could pay for the hire of a tutor plus equipment and enable the group to have an event at which they show the DVD to relatives, friends etc.

Example 2: Young people attending a local youth theatre group are planning on performing their own version of a show currently on in London and they would like to go and see how the professionals do it.

Money from the fund could pay for their travel and tickets.

Youth Capital Fund:
You can apply for money from this fund to enable young people to make changes to a building that they already meet in or even build/buy somewhere to meet.

Example 1: A youth group, run by local community volunteers, have been meeting for many years in quite an old building and, due to a shortage of funds, have been unable to make it fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Money from the fund could pay for the installation of a ramp at the main entrance and any other appropriate alterations.

Example 2: Young people attending a youth group held in their local school are keen on skateboarding and mountain biking and are lucky enough to have the space to bring their own boards and bikes with them to use outside the building.  They would really like to have some ramps to make it more interesting.

Money from the fund could pay for mobile ramps and safety equipment.

It is possible to apply for money from both funds in order to fund a project.

What do young people really gain from these funds?

You will play a major role in deciding what you want to be happening where you live.
You can improve facilities in your area for yourself and other young people.
You can bring about positive changes by providing new opportunities.
You will be heard and appreciated within and by your local community thus raising the profile and improving the image of young people.
You will gain and develop life skills.

What happens next?
