Expulsion: Free Family Event

The South Asian East African Community in Britain 40 years on 12pm - 4pm, Sat 14 July 2012, Leeds City Museum
This free family event marks the 40th anniversary of the Indian population's expulsion from Uganda, and includes several cultural performances and interactive workshops:
* Gujarati dances
* storytelling
* talk and food tasting by Leeds restaurateur Hansa.
As part of the event, from 3pm to 4pm national commentator and journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will be performing the dramatic play 'Nowhere to Belong', based on her migration experience and love of Shakespeare. This is a ticketed, closed door event, suitable for an adult audience - to reserve a place visit: http://expulsion.eventbrite.co.uk/.
You do not need to register or book tickets to attend the main event - all are welcome and the workshops and performances are suitable for families.
In addition to the cultural performances, available on the day will be objects and information from the following organisations:
• Leeds Museum Discovery Centre
• The City of Sanctuary
• South Asian Arts UK
• Hansa's Restaurant
• Community Archives / Research
The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the Indian East African diaspora in Britain, by transferring PhD research into the public domain. This project is sponsored by Arts Council England and The University of Leeds.
